Sleep Drugs Found Only Mildly Effective, but Wildly Popular” proclaimed the On the positive side, Ambien is an effective, FDA-approved sleeping pill. Like the foolish man looking for his car keys far from where he dropped.
a rate of benzo abuse of 106.7 per 10,000 doses (Hajak G et al., Addiction 2003;98:1371- 1378). There have been numerous case reports of zolpidem abuse (for example, see Cubala WJ et al., Br J Clin Pharm 2007;online early article). But one study provided strong evidence that Ambien abuse is much rarer than benzodiazepine abuse.
Call me nuts, but I want to talk more about sleeping pill use. Xanax and Valium) and the related “Z-drugs” (like Ambien) for treating insomnia.
Can patients gradually wean themselves from sedatives, using a chart like the one in the brochure Dr. Tannenbaum and colleagues sent patients? In their study, which looked only at benzodiazepine use, the brochure urged recipients to consult health care professionals before embarking on detoxification.

A closer look at the two leading sleeping pills, Ambien and Lunesta, offers more Like Ambien, Lunesta only reduced time to fall asleep by about 20 minutes.
The primary study on Lunesta was conducted by consultants and employees of Sepracor, the company that markets the pill, and even it showed that Lunesta only provides about six hours of sleep per night. Like Ambien, Lunesta only reduced time to fall asleep by about 20 minutes compared to a placebo. Ads for Lunesta claim that it helps most people fall asleep quickly, stay asleep all through the night, and get an average of 7-8 hours of sleep. Far from curing insomnia, Lunesta users lay awake for over three-quarters of an hour before falling asleep and woke for another three-quarters of an hour during the night.
