CS307 Introduction to Computer Graphics

9.18.2017 | Logan Blare

There are several kinds of lighting models used in Computer Graphics, and within those kinds, there are many algorithms. Let's first lay out the landscape, and.

So, that cosine is quick to compute. We can call this ambient light: light that comes from nowhere in particular. To determine the color of a polygon, we need the following information: material: what kind of stuff is the object made out of? Blue silk is different from blue jeans. (You can of course, put a sphere or something at the location of a light, if you want.) Three.js has some helper objects that can do this for you. Also, point lights can attenuate with distance, so that the intensity goes down for surfaces that are farther from the point light.

Indirect Lights in Computer Graphics

An idea about Indirect Lights in Computer Graphics. Two main concepts of indirect lighting in CGI are Global illumination and Caustics.

Or you may have tried to reflect light on walls using a piece of mirror. When you were kids you might have tried to burn paper using lens (convex lens) under the sunlight. What happens here is light going through lens gets concentrated at one point and generates enough energy to burn the paper.

Lighting in Computer Graphics. Introduction. Lighting in Computer Graphics refers to the placement of lights in a scene to achieve some desired.

It can be used to set an emotional mood and to influence the viewer. Lighting can be used to create more of a 3D effect by separating the foreground from the background, or it can merge the two to create a flat 2D effect.

Too often, people who are creating images or animations ignore or place little emphasis on lighting. This is unfortunate since lighting is a very important part of image synthesis. Image synthesis and animation packages all contain different types of lights that can be placed in different locations and modified by changing the parameters. This is not a new topic as a large amount of work has been done on lighting issues in photography, film, and video. Lighting in Computer Graphics refers to the placement of lights in a scene to achieve some desired effect. The proper use of lights in a scene is one of the things that differentiates the talented CG people from the untalented. Since Image Synthesis is trying to emulate reality, we can learn much from this previous work.

In this section we will discuss the different types of lights usually available in a CG system, how lights are used in film and video, and how they can be used in CG. For a more in-depth discussion, see "Pixel Cinematography: A Lighting Approach for Computer Graphics (SIGGRAPH 96 - Course 30)".

This article describes the historical development of computer graphic algorithms for light reflection and pictorially illustrates what will be commonly available in the near future. Early algorithms considered direct lighting only, but global illumination phenomena with indirect lighting, surface interreflections, and shadows can now be modeled with ray tracing, radiosity, and Monte Carlo simulations. During the past 20 years, computer graphic techniques for simulating the reflection of light have progressed so that today images of photorealistic quality can be produced.
