The AbuseCheck Hair Alcohol Abuse Test is a non-invasive testing procedure which provides a definitive timeline of alcohol abuse from one to six months.
This highly accurate test is not subject to ‘wash-out’ effects from environmental conditions such as hair care or hair treatments, and hair samples may be taken from the scalp or elsewhere on the body if necessary. However, recent studies have shown elevated levels of FAEE in hair could be the result from hair treatment products containing alcohol (see: Forensic Science International, 2011 ). False negatives are eliminated thanks to the accuracy of the FAEE test. Longer hair samples are taken for this test.
In which circumstances should I use a hair test? You should choose a hair What drugs can you test for in hair? What hair can you test for alcohol markers?.
This may lead to drugs leaching out of the hair which makes it harder to detect low drug use. More frequent use can still be detected but the concentration of the drug(s) may be lower than that in untreated hair.
Our overview analysis looks for the presence of two markers of alcohol: ethyl glucuronide (EtG) and the fatty acid ethyl ester (FAEE) ethyl palmitate to determine chronic excessive alcohol use.
We wash all hair samples prior to analysis to safeguard against external contamination however chemical treatments such as hair dye, bleach, chemical straightening and permanent waves can damage hair.
For example, for a year-long analysis, 4 separate 3cm sections will be analysed, and a result provided for each.
