When people abuse drugs like codeine they don't often call it by its real name, and instead use slang names. Recognizing codeine abuse requires knowledge of.

Different incarnations of codeine and codeine-based drugs have their own street names in order to facilitate abuse. Though codeine is a Schedule II drug, it is sometimes sold in combination with other medications as over-the-counter cough medicines which are Schedule IV.

Codeine, according to the NLM, is “used to relieve mild to moderate pain… is also used, usually in combination with other medications, to reduce coughing.” As an opiate analgesic, codeine can cause euphoria if abused and is therefore sold and bought for recreational purposes.

Of course, the use of these street names does not guarantee that someone is abusing codeine, but it is a sign of abuse, and coupled with the other signs, could allow you to recognize codeine abuse in someone you know.

According to NIDA, “A variation of “purple drank” is promethazine-codeine cough syrup mixed with alcohol”. Street names for codeine mixed with other drugs might include loads, pancakes and syrup, fours and doors. The sweet flavors make it even more inviting for young people and increases chances of abuse. Codeine is often mixed with alcohol other drugs to heighten the effects. Fruit flavored candy is sometimes added as well for flavoring. This has dangerous repercussions and is sending more and more people to the ER for treatment.

Young people will often say things like ” We went out with Cody last night and it was off the chain”.
