Medicines called zaleplon, zolpidem and zopiclone are commonly called the Z drugs. Z drugs have similar long-term usage problems as benzodiazepines.
It was because benzodiazepines worked so well to ease symptoms of anxiety and poor sleep that many people came back for more. In 1981, benzodiazepines were the most commonly prescribed medicines in western countries. The problems with their long-term use were not known. When benzodiazepines were first used they were thought to be safe. Some people started to take them regularly.
Some people have an anxious personality and feel anxious fairly often. Although most people will feel anxious at some time, sometimes the symptoms become prolonged and distressing.
Similar medications include eszopiclone (Lunesta) and zaleplon (Sonata). Zolpidem and its cousins are very effective for sleep. However, as with all medications.
However, due to its pharmacological properties, particularly its influence on the histaminic receptors in the brain, the medication is used in low doses to help induce sleep. Granted, quetiapine may improve sleep in some people, but it comes with risks. For example, antipsychotic medications commonly are used to treat insomnia. One in particular is quetiapine, also known as Seroquel.
