The active ingredient in PREVACID Delayed-Release Capsules and PREVACID SoluTab Delayed- Release Orally Disintegrating Tablets is lansoprazole.

Worldwide, over 10,000 patients have been treated with PREVACID in Phase 2 or Phase 3 clinical trials involving various dosages and durations of treatment. In general, PREVACID treatment has been well-tolerated in both short-term and long-term trials.

USE IN OTHER FOODS AND LIQUIDS HAS NOT BEEN STUDIED CLINICALLY AND IS THEREFORE NOT RECOMMENDED.

Brand Names: FIRST Lansoprazole, Prevacid, Prevacid OTC, Prevacid SoluTab, Prevacid I.V. Prevacid (lansoprazole) belongs to a group of drugs called proton pump inhibitors. Over-the-counter Prevacid OTC is used to treat frequent heartburn that happens 2 or more days per week.

Ask a doctor or pharmacist if it is safe for you to take Prevacid if you have liver disease, or low levels of magnesium in your blood.

Some forms of Prevacid may contain phenylalanine. l your doctor if you have phenylketonuria.

Prevacid is not for immediate relief of heartburn symptoms.

l your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. This medicine is not expected to harm an unborn baby.

Swallow the medication whole. Doing so may destroy the drug. Or you may empty the capsule's contents into a small amount (2 ounces or 60 milliliters) of juice, stir, and drink the mixture right away without chewing it. If you have trouble swallowing the capsule, you may open the capsule and sprinkle its contents on a spoonful of soft food (such as applesauce, cottage cheese, yogurt) and swallow the mixture right away without chewing it. Then rinse the glass with more juice and drink to make sure you have taken the entire dose.

Information on lansoprazole (Heartburn Relief 24 Hour, Heartburn Treatment 24 Hour, Prevacid 24), a drug used to treat ulcers of the stomach.

He graduated from Yale University School of Medicine and trained in internal medicine and gastroenterology at UCLA/Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. Jay W. Marks, MD, is a board-certified internist and gastroenterologist.

High doses and long-term use (1 year or longer) may increase the risk of osteoporosis -related fractures of the hip, wrist, or spine. Proton pump inhibitors may increase the risk of Clostridium difficile infection. Prolonged use also reduces absorption of vitamin B12 ( cyanocobalamin ).

Analysis of patients taking PPIs for long periods of time showed an increased risk of heart attacks.
